Symptoms of OCD

Symptoms of OCD, or how they manifest in your life, can vary from person to person. However, these symptoms often fall into two categories: obsessions and compulsions.

Obsessions are defined in the DSM 5 as ‘recurrent and persistent thoughts, urges, or images that are experienced, at some point during the disturbance, as intrusive, unwanted, and that, in most individuals, cause marked anxiety or distress.’ A person with OCD has generally tried to ignore, suppress, or end these thoughts.

Compulsions, then, are the response to obsessions. Compulsions are repetitive behaviors meant to prevent or reduce distress or to prevent some dreaded event or situation. These are behaviors that you feel a need to perform, and they may have very set rules. Compulsions can be outward and observed behaviors such as counting or handwashing, or they can be mental behaviors such as praying, reassuring, or repeating words in a silent voice.

Ultimately, these obsessions and compulsions cause distress or impairment in some areas of your life. They may impact relationships, school/work, or other important aspects of your life

OCD Treatment Works

If you are struggling with any of the OCD symptoms listed above, we urge you to seek treatment. Beverly Mental Health Service offers evidence-based treatment that is truly effective. Living with OCD can be challenging, but with the right help, it is possible to overcome it and lead a happy and fulfilling life

Our Exposure & Response Prevention (ERP) as OCD Treatment

At Beverly Mental Health Service, our psychiatrists and mental health therapists in LA are trained in Exposure & Response Prevention (ERP), the most effective treatment for OCD.

Exposures
The ‘exposure’ part of the name refers to a specific aspect of OCD treatment. We help you systematically expose yourself to the thoughts, images, objections, or situations that have triggered past anxiety. This part may not sound enjoyable, but it is crucial for your recovery. We support you as you push forward through that anxiety, helping you face your fears in a successful and healthy way.

Response Prevention
Then, the ‘response prevention’ part of ERP means refraining from engaging in the typical behaviors, known as ‘compulsions,’ that you would usually do when your anxiety or obsessive thoughts have been activated. This is challenging at first since you’re very used to responding to triggers with these compulsions. But, again, we provide you support every step of the way.

This Will Be Different
If you have OCD, you’ve likely tried to confront your obsessions and anxiety before. You may have tried to reason with yourself and ‘talk yourself out of’ your anxiety, but it hasn’t worked. ERP is different because you are committing not only to facing your anxiety but also to not engaging in your compulsions to quell that anxiety.

It’s normal to feel a bit anxious about starting ERP. However, research has consistently shown that ERP should be the first-line treatment for OCD because it works. Our team believes you deserve to regain control of your life, so we want to offer you the most effective treatment options available.
